PAST ACHIEVEMENTS Wagon Design: In the sixties and seventies, the 8 wheeler BOX, BCX and BR wagons having center buffer couplers, roller bearing, UIC bogies and axle load capacities of 20.3t were developed. This was a quantum improvement over the earlier four-wheeler, plain bearing and screw-coupling type of stock with axle load 16.3t inherited by the Indian Railways.RDSO further developed 8-Wheeler freight BOXN, BCN, BTPN, BOBR and BTPGLN wagons with features like:

Cartridge taper roller bearing.

High tensile center buffer couplers & high capacity draft gears. ·  Air brake ·Cast steel Casnub bogie with Elastomeric pads.

Improved track-loading density (from 5.77 ton per meter in BOX wagons to 7.59 tonne per meter in BOXN wagons).

Special type of wagons for transporting heavy and special sized consignment have also been developed for public/private sector e.g.,

Beside the above, RDSO has also designed & developed Locomotives For Export , some of which are as under:

2300 hp, 16t axle load, MG/Cape gauge diesel electric locomotive with 120 kmph speed potential The prototype of this locomotive has already been manufactured by DLW.

2300 HP CAPE GAUGE LOCOMOTIVE ·3100 hp, 20t axle load Standard Gauge diesel electric locomotive with 140 kmph speed potential. The design of this locomotive has been completed and its demand is expected from Iraq. Electric Locomotives: 16 totally indigenous designs of electric locomotives, viz., WCG2, WCM6, WCAM1, WCAM2, WCAM3, WCAG1, WAM4, WAM4 (6P), WAG5, WAG7, WAG7H, WAP1,
WAP2, WAP3, WAP4 and WAP6 have been developed by RDSO in the past years.

Some of the major designs developed by RDSO related to Electric Locomotives are as under: Development of high-speed pantograph.

Suspension rolling bearing arrangement for TAO-659 TM.
Single section potted field coils for TAO-659 TM ·  25 kV vertical type cable head termination arrangement for electric    locomotive.

·                LED type flasher light and marker light. ·                 High visibility twin beam electric loco head light ·                 Low maintenance batteries for electric locomotive. ·                 Provision of electromagnetic unloader on delivery pipe of compressor.

  Twin Beam Headlight

Development of microprocessor based combined wheel slip detection and control system, field weakening system for traction and dynamic braking excitation for electric locomotive.

Indigenisation of traction motor, auxiliary motors for 3-phase locomotive.

Development of indigenous traction transformers with steel tank for 3-phase locomotive.

Adoption of H-class high starting torque compressors motors.

Development of MVMT and MVRH motors using dual coated winding             wires. Signalling: To meet the ever growing need of safety and higher volume of traffic, signaling equipment in use on Indian Railways have been upgraded from old semaphore signaling system to track circuited automatic signaling system by RDSO. Some of the notable developments by RDSO include Digital axle counter, 220mm point machine, Block proving with Axle counter, Universal Fail-safe Block Interface equipment, Solid State Interlocking & Integrated Power supply system. 220mm Point Machines  : High speed as well as thick web turn outs require about 160mm opening at the toe of the switch compared to 115 mm of the conventional turn outs. The existing point machine  which has a throw of 143 mm maximum can not be used for these type of switches. Hence for operation  of these turn outs a new point machine has been developed.

Carriage Design: ·                 Development of  low platform container flat wagons: Complete design of low platform container flat wagons has been developed and currently about 30 rakes are in operation. Necessary inputs for maintenance are being provided on need basis to railways.

Development of Coaching Container Flat: To further improve the carrying capacity of parcel vans and also facilitate handling of parcel traffic in non-passenger areas, design of CCF has been developed by this Directorate. A prototype vehicle was built and subjected

to detailed oscillation trials. Final speed certificate for operation at a maximum speed of 105 km/h has been issued.

Development of Road Railer: Road Railer is one of the most efficient means of bi-modal transport system which enables an operator to provide door-to-door service by combining best possible

use of road and rail   network. The prototype vehicle built by M/s. KPC was subjected to detailed oscillation and service trials. As a result of successful validation of the design, speed certificate has been issued for operation of these vehicles at a maximum speed of 80 km/h.

High capacity Parcel Van: High capacity parcel van having higher carrying capacity of 23 t as against 18 t existing parcel vans has been developed. This parcel van has been cleared for operation at 105 km/h on main line track and 130 km/h on Rajdhani standard track. These are now in regular service, named  ‘Millennium Express’ trains.

·                 Composition brake blocks: ‘K’ & ‘L’ type composition brake blocks including environment friendly non asbestos type have been developed.

· Design of the coach ends has been modified to prevent propagation of fire in case fire takes place.

·Bogie mounted brake system has been developed and made standard fitting on all passenger coaches currently under manufacture. Track Design: q       Development of PRC sleepers: Concrete sleeper has been developed indigenously by RDSO to replace metal and wooden sleepers. This is most suitable for modern track and has provided better maintainability. It is environment friendly and has resulted into saving in sleeper procurement cost by more than Rs.300 crores per annum. It has also saved 5 lacs numbers of trees per year from felling to meet the requirement of wooden sleepers.

q       Improvements in quality of rails:  With constant persuasion, quality of rails being procured has improved with provision of following quality control installations at Bhilai Steel Plant: ·                Vacuum degassing facility for keeping hydrogen content in  liquid steel less than 3 ppm.

Bi-planer straightening machine – To achieve better end-straightness with lower residual stresses.

On-line USFD machine – latest state of art on – line USFD machine with 13 probes has been installed to check every rail ultrasonically. Super Check cell with one officer and one supervisor each from Track and M&C directorates has been formed to have a check on the system of quality of inspection. q       Improvements in quality of rail welding: Specification of  AT welding of rails has been revised incorporating complete weld chemistry (as against earlier provision of specifying only Aluminum content) and making  USFD testing of sample welds at the time of passing of batch of portions compulsory.

AT welding technique using compressed air – petrol mixture for pre-heating offered by an approved welding firm has been found satisfactory in the lab evaluation and fatigue testing and the field trials are at advanced stage.   This will reduce preheating time from 11 minutes to 4 minutes.

Powder welding technique for repairs to wheel scabs, wheel burns and cupped thermit welded joints has been approved for regular adoption in the field. AT weld technique of 60 kg HH rails has been approved for regular adoption in the field.

q       Indigenous development of elastic fastenings: Various designs of elastic fastenings such as Pandrol clips, ERC Mk-II, ERC Mk-III and ERC Mk-V, GR sole plates of various thickness and liners (metal, composite, GFN and combination) have been developed indigenously at RDSO to meet the challenges of modern track system.
